Cyclafem 7 / 7 / 7 Review

Cyclafem 7 / 7 / 7 (norethisterone / ethinyl estradiol) is a combination hormonal contraceptive which is used to prevent pregnancy.

Contents:

Indications for use

  • Oral contraception.

Mechanism of action

The drug has a contraceptive effect. It contains the optimal ratio of two hormones – progestogen (norethisterone) and estrogen (ethinyl estradiol), that suppress the production of gonadotropic (regulating the activity of the sex glands) hormones, inhibit the maturation of the follicle (structural-functional element of the ovary), inhibit ovulation (the release of a mature egg from the ovary). The drug does not affect the lipid (fat) metabolism.

Dosage and mode of application

Take 1 tablet daily for 28 days in a row, starting from the 1st day of the menstrual period. Do not make a break between packages. After delivery, in the absence of lactation (milk formation), the contraceptive can be started from the 1st day of the first menstrual bleeding. After an abortion, the drug should be started immediately.

Overdose

If you have overdosed Cyclafem 7 / 7 / 7 and have serious symptoms such as or trouble breathing, severe nausea and vomiting, sudden vaginal bleeding, call a doctor. Overdose needs a clinical supervision.

Cyclafem 7 / 7 / 7 side effects can include:

  • intermenstrual vaginal bleeding;
  • a headache;
  • diarrhea, vomiting;
  • engorgement of the mammary glands;
  • excessive hair growth;
  • acne;
  • oily skin;
  • increased appetite.

Contraindications

  • cerebrovascular diseases (vascular diseases of the brain);
  • diseases of the coronary (heart) vessels;

  • neoplasms of the genitourinary system;
    estrogen-dependent neoplasia (uterus);
  • uterine bleeding of unknown etiology.

Interactions

Barbiturates, some antiepileptic drugs (carbamazepine, phenytoin) can increase the metabolism of norethisterone and ethinyl estradiol that make up the drug. A decrease in the effective concentration is observed with simultaneous use with some antibiotics (ampicillin, rifampicin), which is associated with changes in the microflora in the intestine. Efficiency decreases with regular excessive use of ethanol. When taking gestagen-estrogen drugs, correction of the dosage regimen of hypoglycemic drugs may be necessary.

Pregnancy and breastfeeding

Cyclafem 7 / 7 / 7 is contraindicated for use during pregnancy and breastfeeding.

What if I miss a pill?

If you missed 1 tablet in Weeks 1, 2, or 3, it should be taken as soon as you remember. If you missed 2 tablets in Week 1 or Week 2, you should take 2 tablets the day you remember and 2 tablets the next day; and then keep on taking 1 tablet a day until you finish the pack. You use a backup contraception method if you have sexual intercourse in the seven days after missing pills. If you missed 2 tablets in the Week 3 or missed 3 or more “active” tablets in a row, you should keep on taking 1 tablet daily until Sunday. On Sunday, discard the rest of the tablets and start a new Cyclafem 7 / 7 / 7 pack that same day. Use a backup contraception method if you have sexual intercourse in the seven 7 days after missing pills.

Precautions

Before taking birth control pills and every 6 months, it’s recommended to undergo general medical and gynecological examinations (gynecological monitoring, examination of the mammary glands, liver function, control of blood pressure and cholesterol concentration in the blood, urinalysis, cytological smear analysis).

The drug may change the results of skin allergy tests, reducing the concentration of LH and FSH.

The risk of cardiovascular complications increases with smoking (especially after the age of 35 years).

Stop taking the contraceptive immediately if you have the following symptoms: inflammation of the vein wall, vascular occlusion with a blood clot, embolism – bloating of the veins, unusual pain in the legs, chest pain during breathing or a cough, feeling of tightness in the chest; severe/unusual headaches, sudden impairment of hearing and vision, movement disorders.

The drug is discontinued 6 weeks before the planned surgery.

The risk of thrombosis increases with high blood pressure.

The contraceptive is canceled with hepatitis, jaundice, itching, cholestasis, increased epilepsy attacks, primary or secondary porphyria.

Vomiting or diarrhea can lead to the removal of norethisterone / ethinyl estradiol from the body, therefore, in cases where these symptoms disappear within 1 day, you need to take an additional pill of Cyclafem 7 / 7 / 7. If vomiting or diarrhea persists longer, you should temporarily use other methods of birth control.
